Hats are such a great way to learn a new skill.  Their small size makes it quick and easy to work through techniques that you can later use on bigger projects.  This hat is the perfect project for learning mosaic knitting.  It takes two colors of dk weight yarn to create the gorgeous stitch pattern.

Materials:
dk weight yarn (mail color 172 yds yards, contrast color 28 yards)
Sample knit in Nyssa
US 5, 6 & 7  16" circular needles
Or, US 6 & 7 4" Interchangeable Tips in Metal or Bamboo, and a small Twist or Spin 8" Cable
US 6 Double Pointed Needles
Beginning of Round Marker

Pre-work:
With smaller needles, cast on for desired size and work single layer ribbing pattern.  Change to middle size needles and knit 3 rounds.  You are now ready for class!
